Why Your Appliance's Model Number Matters More Than You Think
July 12, 2026
It’s a small sticker that’s easy to ignore until something breaks — but your appliance’s model number is the single most useful piece of information for getting the right part on the first visit.
Why It’s Not Just a Formality
Manufacturers revise appliance models frequently, sometimes multiple times within the same product line in a single year. Two refrigerators that look identical and share a brand name can use different compressors, different control boards, or different door seal dimensions depending on when they were manufactured. The model number — not the brand, not the general description — is what pins down exactly which parts are compatible.
Where to Actually Look
Refrigerator model tags are usually inside the fresh food compartment, often on a side wall or near the top. Dishwasher tags are typically on the door edge, visible when the door is open. Range and oven tags can be behind the storage drawer, around the door frame, or occasionally under the cooktop surface, which sometimes means lifting the cooktop to see it. Washer and dryer tags are commonly around the door opening or on the back panel.
What’s On the Tag Besides the Model Number
Most tags also list a serial number, which can matter for warranty verification and, on some brands, helps identify a specific manufacturing batch tied to a known component issue. It’s worth photographing the whole tag rather than just the model number, since a technician may need both.
If You Can’t Find It
Tags do fade, get painted over during a remodel, or sit in a spot that’s genuinely hard to access without appliance-specific knowledge. This isn’t a dealbreaker — a technician can usually identify the appliance and locate the tag on-site, or in some cases identify enough from the appliance’s visible design and control layout to begin diagnosis while confirming the exact model separately.
Why This Speeds Up Your Repair
When we know the model number before arriving, we can often bring the correct part on the first visit instead of diagnosing, ordering, and returning. It’s the single best thing you can do to shorten a repair timeline.
