Washer Shaking or Vibrating? Common Causes and Fixes

June 29, 2026

A washer that shakes or walks across the floor during the spin cycle is more than an annoyance — left unaddressed, it can loosen internal components or damage the floor and surrounding cabinetry over time.

Start With the Basics: Is It Level?

The single most common cause, and the easiest to check yourself, is a washer that isn’t sitting level. Most washers have adjustable feet, and even a small tilt can cause noticeable vibration during the high-speed spin cycle. Use a level across the top of the machine front-to-back and side-to-side, and adjust the feet until it reads flat.

Unbalanced Loads Happen More Than You’d Think

Large single items — a comforter, a bath mat, a load of towels — can bunch to one side of the drum and throw off the balance even in a perfectly level, mechanically sound washer. Most modern washers detect this and slow or stop the spin cycle, but older or heavily loaded units may not catch it every time.

Worn Suspension Components Are a Common Mechanical Cause

Washers use springs or shock absorbers to isolate the drum from the cabinet during the spin cycle. Over years of use, these wear out and lose their ability to absorb the drum’s movement, which shows up as vibration that gets worse over time rather than appearing suddenly.

Front-Load Washers Add Drum Bearings to the List

On front-load washers specifically, worn drum bearings are a real possibility, especially on units past the 8-10 year mark. This tends to come with a grinding or rumbling noise in addition to vibration, and it’s a more involved repair than suspension or leveling — worth having diagnosed properly rather than assumed, since the labor cost can start to approach replacement value on older units.

When to Call

If leveling the machine and checking for unbalanced loads doesn’t resolve it, or if you hear grinding along with the vibration, it’s time for a proper diagnosis rather than continuing to run a machine that’s shaking hard enough to move.
