Signs Your Refrigerator Compressor Is Failing

July 17, 2026

The compressor is the heart of your refrigerator’s cooling system, and while total compressor failure gets the most attention, it usually gives off warning signs first — worth knowing since catching it early can sometimes mean a smaller repair instead of a full replacement.

Unusual Noise Is Often the First Sign

A healthy compressor runs with a low, fairly consistent hum. A compressor starting to fail may develop a louder buzzing, clicking, or knocking sound, particularly right when it kicks on. Some of this can also come from the condenser fan rather than the compressor itself, which is exactly why a proper diagnosis matters before assuming the worst — a fan is a much less expensive repair.

The Refrigerator Runs Constantly Without Fully Cooling

If the compressor is struggling but hasn’t fully failed, you may notice the refrigerator running almost continuously while still not reaching a properly cold temperature. This is different from a refrigerator that’s simply working hard on a hot day — if it never seems to catch up or cycle off normally over several days, that’s worth having checked.

The Exterior Feels Unusually Hot

It’s normal for the area around the compressor compartment (usually the back or bottom of the refrigerator) to feel warm. A compressor working overtime to compensate for a developing problem can make that area noticeably hotter than usual, sometimes hot enough to be uncomfortable to touch for more than a moment.

Frequent Circuit Trips or Clicking Off and On

A compressor nearing failure can draw irregular current, which sometimes shows up as the refrigerator repeatedly clicking off and restarting, or in some cases tripping a circuit breaker. This is different from a normal defrost cycle, which follows a predictable schedule rather than random cycling.

Why Catching It Early Matters

A compressor that’s struggling but still functioning sometimes points to a simpler underlying cause — a dirty condenser coil making it work harder than it should, or a failing start relay — that’s far less expensive to fix than full compressor replacement. Waiting until the compressor fails completely removes that option.
