How Long Do Major Appliances Really Last?

June 21, 2026

“Is it worth fixing?” is one of the first questions we get on almost every call, and age is a real part of that answer — but it’s not the whole answer.

Typical Lifespans by Appliance

These are general industry ranges for well-maintained appliances, not guarantees:

  • Refrigerators: 12-17 years, longer for premium built-in brands
  • Freezers: 12-16 years
  • Dishwashers: 9-12 years
  • Ranges and ovens: 13-17 years for the mechanical components; electronics can fail sooner
  • Washers: 8-12 years, front-load bearings often the limiting factor
  • Dryers: 10-13 years

Premium and professional-grade brands like Sub-Zero, Wolf, and Viking are generally built for the longer end of these ranges or beyond, which is part of why their higher purchase price and repair costs still tend to pencil out over the appliance’s full life.

What Actually Shortens Appliance Life

Hard water accelerates wear on dishwashers and washing machines. Dusty or blocked condenser coils make refrigerator compressors work harder than they should, shortening their life. Overloading washers and dryers stresses belts, bearings, and motors faster than normal use would. None of these are things a homeowner necessarily notices happening, which is part of why a repair sometimes reveals a maintenance issue alongside the primary failure.

Age Is a Factor, Not a Verdict

A 9-year-old refrigerator with a failed evaporator fan is usually worth repairing — the fan is inexpensive relative to a new refrigerator, and there’s no reason to expect the rest of the unit is close to failing too. A 9-year-old refrigerator with a failed compressor is a closer call, since compressor labor and parts start to approach a meaningful share of replacement cost. The right question isn’t just “how old is it” but “what specifically failed, and what does that part cost relative to a new unit.”

Built-In and Premium Appliances Skew the Math Further

Replacing a panel-ready refrigerator or a professional-style range isn’t just an appliance purchase — it can mean matching cabinetry, adjusting gas or electrical lines, or dealing with dimensions that don’t match the old unit exactly. That’s a strong argument for repair on premium built-ins even in cases where a standard freestanding appliance might make more sense to replace.
