Gas vs. Electric Oven Repair: What Homeowners Should Know

June 17, 2026

Gas and electric ovens can look nearly identical from the outside, but the heating systems inside them are completely different — which means the same symptom, like an oven that won’t reach temperature, points to a different part depending on which type you have.

Gas Ovens: The Igniter Is Usually the Story

In a gas oven, the igniter has to get hot enough to open the gas valve and light the burner. When an igniter weakens, it often still glows and clicks, giving the impression something is happening, but it never gets hot enough to fully open the valve. That’s why a gas oven that “seems to be trying” but never heats is almost always an igniter problem, not a gas supply issue.

Electric Ovens: It’s About the Elements and Sensor

Electric ovens rely on bake and broil elements along with a temperature sensor that reports back to the control board. A visibly damaged element — one with a blister, break, or bright orange hot spot — is usually easy to spot. But an oven that runs consistently too hot or too cold with elements that look fine often points to a bad temperature sensor giving the control board incorrect readings.

Dual-Fuel and Range Ovens Combine Both Worlds

If you have a dual-fuel range — gas cooktop, electric oven — the two systems are independent and diagnosed separately. A burner problem on top doesn’t mean the oven underneath is affected, and vice versa. This trips people up more than you’d expect, since it seems logical that “the range” would fail as one unit.

What This Means for Repair Cost

Igniter replacement on a gas oven is generally one of the more affordable oven repairs. Electric element replacement is similarly reasonable. Temperature sensor and control board diagnostics run a bit higher since they require more testing time to isolate correctly rather than a straightforward part swap.
