Dryer Taking Too Long to Dry? It Might Be a Fire Risk

July 2, 2026

If your dryer has been taking longer and longer to finish a load, it’s worth treating as more than an inconvenience. Restricted airflow is both the most common cause of slow drying and one of the leading causes of dryer fires.

Why Slow Drying and Fire Risk Are the Same Issue

A dryer works by pushing hot, moist air out through the exhaust vent while pulling in fresh air. When that vent gets restricted — by lint buildup, a crushed section of ducting, or a bird’s nest at the exterior vent cap — two things happen at once: drying takes longer because moist air isn’t leaving efficiently, and heat builds up inside the dryer and duct instead of venting outside. That heat buildup, combined with trapped lint, is exactly the combination that causes dryer fires.

The Lint Screen Isn’t Enough

Cleaning the lint screen before every load is good practice, but it only catches a portion of the lint your dryer produces. The rest travels into the vent line, where it accumulates over months and years, especially in long or bent duct runs. If your dryer vent run is longer than about 25 feet or has multiple bends, it needs professional cleaning more often than a standard short, straight run.

Other Causes Worth Ruling Out

If the vent is clear and drying is still slow, a partially failed heating element is a common next suspect — it may still work, just not at full capacity. A clogged lint trap housing (separate from the removable screen) or a failing thermostat that’s cutting the heating cycle short too early are less common but real possibilities.

What We Check on a Dryer Repair Visit

Because of the fire safety angle, we check the vent line for lint restriction as a standard part of any dryer repair, not just when slow drying is the specific complaint. We also test the heating element and thermostat and inspect the drum belt and rollers if there’s unusual noise involved.
